VisionQuest Will Open the Doors to the Young Avengers? Ruaridh Mollica’s Clue

VisionQuest has sparked several threads about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and one in particular surely points to the Young Avengers, a project that might take some time to take off but already seems to have gathered all the necessary elements to begin development. While in Agatha All Along Wanda’s twin brother Wiccan appeared, in VisionQuest it is Tommy’s turn, the other child of Wanda and Vision dispersed across the Multiverse and portrayed by Ruaridh Mollica. Mollica, reflecting on the role his character—also known as Speed—could have, let slip a few too many details.

VisionQuest, Ruaridh Mollica hints at Tommy’s possible role in the Young Avengers

So far the Marvel Universe has introduced several young heroes who could form a team of young Avengers. Kate Bishop, Cassie Lang, Kamala Khan and Billy Maximoff have already shown their potential, and Tommy Shephard could soon join them after what unfolds in VisionQuest.

Available on Disney+ with the first two episodes, VisionQuest brings Vision back to the MCU, recounting what happened to him after the events of WandaVision. In addition to bearing a bounty on his head and numerous AI units inside his brain, including Ultron, Vision also has to deal with the sudden rekindling of fatherhood when a boy shows up claiming to be his son: it is Tommy.

Ruaridh Mollica, who plays him, told Collider at the New York Comic Con how he is preparing for his new place in the MCU: “I’ve caught up on all the Young Avengers comics. I bought them all. There’s the one with me and Wiccan on the cover and then the one about Tommy. He’s in an office, yawning at a desk, and yes, I’ve got them all, obviously. I mean, what better way to understand a character than through comics?”

That was a wise choice by Ruaridh Mollica, even though Tommy and Billy’s stories in the comics are often tangled and tied to those of Scarlet Witch. Moreover, in the comics they frequently end up leading the Young Avengers. It’s encouraging that his twin brother Wiccan has already been introduced into the MCU with the portrayal by Joe Locke in Agatha All Along, while VisionQuest will tell what happened to Tommy after Wanda’s spell ends. The audience meets this character in London; he is an orphan and has strange dreams of a family he does not remember ever having: “I think deep down everyone just wants to be seen and noticed, and I think Tommy is like that too. I mean, you meet him as Thomas Shepard, a young London orphan who has never had a real family, and then he has all these dreams and nightmares about Vision and Wanda and a family that could never be real, and he simply longs for love, to be reunited, and, yes, to be seen,” added the actor.
