Warner Bros Developing a Get Smart Reboot with John Mulaney

It’s time to dust off the legendary “shoe phone” from the back of the closet. Warner Bros. is working to make a new reboot of the classic 1960s series ‘Get Smart’, known in Spain as ‘Superagente 86’. In fact, the studio is already eyeing its lead star, and sources are already pointing to a name: none other than the actor, screenwriter, and comedian John Mulaney.

The exclusive comes from Deadline, which asserts that the project is still in very early stages to fix anything definitively. The series would be led mainly by Seth Grahame-Smith, who had already stood out for the company with his work on producing ‘Now You See Me 3’. He would be joined as producers Chuck Roven and Andrew Lazar.

Spider-Ham on the Line

Mulaney is a somewhat orthodox choice, not one many would have placed on their bingo card, but it fits with his latest work. His career has stood out for stand-up comedy specials that have found international success, especially on platforms like Netflix. Where he has ventured more into Hollywood has been in voice acting, with roles such as Spider-Ham in ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ or the popular villain Jack Horner in ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’.

Although his face may not yet be widely recognized by major Hollywood productions, the chance to give the iconic Maxwell Smart a fresh look could push his career in a new direction. The last actor to bring him to life was the legendary Steve Carell in the 2008 film adaptation of ‘Get Smart’, a turn that came during his peak years with ‘The Office’ on air. Before him, the role made famous a great comedy icon like Don Adams, who played the character multiple times across several decades.

New Attempt

For the moment it’s hard to know what form a reboot of ‘Get Smart’ would take. Earlier we mentioned the previous attempt to resurrect the franchise with a feature film in 2008, which was also driven by Warner Bros. with the hope of kicking off a new movie franchise. Although it didn’t achieve poor commercial results, it didn’t quite land with critics and audiences, grossing only $200 million against a budget of $80 million.
