Reacher is back streaming on Prime Video with a fourth season currently underway, once again led by Alan Ritchson as he tackles a new misadventure. The character was born on the page thanks to Lee Child and has earned two film adaptations with Tom Cruise before moving to the small screen on Prime Video. Created by Nick Santora, the TV series achieved immediate success, but during the fourth season fans claim it includes a very small reference to another successful Netflix series.
Reacher 4 and that little Easter egg about The Night Agent explained
Could Reacher subtly poke fun at The Night Agent? That’s what fans are thinking as they follow the former major of the United States Army Military Police. The fourth season is adapted from Lee Child’s novel The Twelve Signs and follows Reacher as he tackles a new mystery. After witnessing a woman’s suicide on the subway, Reacher ends up in a dangerous game that pits him against ruthless and powerful enemies.
One of the traits most appreciated by fans is the hero’s humor, often brightened by stoic quips. One of these might be a nod to another successful action series on Netflix: The Night Agent. It all unfolds in the first episode of the fourth season, when Reacher faces a terrorist attack on the subway. During the episode, Shaun Docherty gives precise instructions to Tamara, telling her to “clock in and out and hope the phone doesn’t ring in the meantime.” While not a direct quotation, it’s quite familiar to fans of The Night Agent because it mirrors Peter’s initial task at the start of the TV series. The lead played by Gabriel Basso initially works in the White House basement, and his only job is to answer a phone that one hopes will never ring. Fate, of course, has it that one night that phone does ring, sparking Peter’s adventure.
The line spoken by Docherty included in the fourth season of Reacher is therefore a playful easter egg that winks at The Night Agent. It’s likely the line wasn’t intended as a cross-p series nod, but fans of both shows may have noticed the resemblance quite easily.
