Emmy Rossum is back on television, cast as the lead in Furious, a psychological thriller streaming on Disney+ and conceived by Liz Meriwether, whose first season eagerly thrilled audiences, earning a swift renewal for a second season. In the meantime, the creator has commented on some of the highlights from the last episode, revealing what to expect in the upcoming season.
Furious, the creator confronts Alice’s choices and the questions to face in Season 2
The first season closed with numerous questions, but it clarified one aspect of Jay Easton’s death: it was Alice who deprived him of oxygen, dooming him to death, yet that detail never appeared in the report. Catherine, however, knows that it was her, and they deal with the matter in the final scene of the first season, which ends with an enigmatic smile from Alice. Regarding the protagonist’s state of mind, the creator told Entertainment Weekly: “There’s something that obviously isn’t going well at all for her character, right? I think it’s something that reads as a victory, but also as a step toward a somewhat unhealthy direction for her.” Liz Meriwether then clarified: “I am by no means using the TV series as a platform to incite murder,” making her position clear.
Alice and Catherine may seem quite different, but they have shared a similarly troubled path: both are victims of injustices, but while Alice often tries to operate within the law, Catherine has chosen to mete out justice on her own. The season finale flipped this dynamic when Alice intentionally decides to kill Jay Easton. Does that mean Season 2 will resemble Catherine more? The creator’s answer was: “We’re in the writers’ room right now and we’re discussing everything.” Which translates to: her lips are sealed.
She further clarified that the first season ends with Alice appearing to be at “the point where Catherine is at the beginning, but I don’t think she will make all the choices she did. Even so, she is moving toward that direction in a sense.” In any case, the questions are numerous, a deliberate choice by the creator to present a complex picture. Regarding Season 2, she added that from the outset she had envisioned this story with a multi-season structure: “I’m quite nervous about having to shoot another full season, especially because in recent years I’ve worked on miniseries. But the way I calm myself is by revisiting the characters… I love Alice and Nora, and I love Danny, and I’m excited to be with them again and see what they’ll get up to.”
