What’s Inside Silo 1? Clues So Far Hint at a Bitter Truth

One of the most cryptic TV series of recent years is Silo, streamed on Apple TV and led by Rebecca Ferguson. All the residents of Silo 18 have no idea why they’re there, what happened before the Rebellion more than a century earlier, or what happened to the world beyond. All they know is that their life unfolds inside that Silo and that everyone must play their part so that all can live in harmony. Juliette Nichols, the heroine, discovers that everything they know is a lie and, one by one, tries to expose the deceptions told to the inhabitants of the Silo. In the course of the second season, we follow Juliette outside her Silo as she makes her way toward another Silo, number 17, encountering numerous corpses and learning that that Silo is now nearly empty of inhabitants: the sole exception being Solo and a group of surviving children. In the third season, Juliette has returned to her Silo but is dealing with memory problems; yet a small detail shared by Bernard could have hinted at some extra information about Silo number 1.

Silo, what is really hidden in Silo 1? The clues so far

Juliette has discovered that there are total 51 Silos and that the closest to hers, 17, is now adrift: very few survivors remain, as evidenced by the numerous corpses on the surface. But if the Silo she lives in is number 18, what do we know about Silo 1?

Apparently the role played by this Silo is perilously important. As Bernard explains, all 50 built Silos are linked to the first one, which powers the electrical system of the IT floor where the server room is located, and, in fact, maintains continuous communication with a kind of AI that issues orders. Or at least that is what seems to emerge in the course of season two; in season three, through communications with Camille, a different aspect of the voice in the server room has surfaced. And if behind the Algorithm‘s voice hides, in fact, a human being? For instance, it demonstrates an ability to adapt to situations and conversations that allow it to manipulate other characters like Juliette and Camille. On one occasion Camille attempted to contact it and it took some time to reveal itself, just as in other conversations it took time before replying, as if it needed to thoroughly reason about what to say.

According to Bernard, all Silos are connected to the first via electrical lines, so if there were a real person behind that voice he would necessarily live in Silo 1 and would prove to be a very dangerous individual, holding the lives of countless people in their hands. Probably to learn more we will have to wait for the end of the third season.
