A WhatsApp profile can reveal more than a name and picture. If the visibility controls are left broad, another person may be able to see when the account was last active or whether it is online at that moment.
That information can be limited in a few taps. It does not make an account anonymous, but it gives people a straightforward way to reduce what unknown numbers, casual contacts or selected individuals can learn about their activity.
Find the last-seen controls
In WhatsApp, open Settings > Privacy > Last seen and online. On some phones, Settings is reached through a menu first. Labels and screen positions can differ slightly between Android and iPhone, and may change as WhatsApp updates the app or rolls features out by region.
The last-seen section generally offers Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except… and Nobody. Everyone is the broadest choice. My contacts restricts visibility to numbers saved as contacts, while the exception option can exclude particular saved contacts.
Nobody is the most restrictive last-seen choice. It can suit someone who does not want other users to know the time of their most recent activity. My contacts except… may be more practical when the concern relates to a limited number of people rather than an entire address book.
Match online visibility to the safer choice
On the same screen, WhatsApp provides a separate control for who can see when the person is online. Choosing Same as last seen applies the selected last-seen audience to online visibility, rather than leaving the live status available more broadly.
Both parts deserve attention. Restricting a historical timestamp while allowing a wider audience to see “online” can still disclose current use. Review the two selections together and choose the audience that fits the level of privacy wanted.
A useful conservative setup is Nobody for last seen and Same as last seen for online. It is not the only reasonable configuration: people who use WhatsApp mainly with friends and family may prefer My contacts, possibly with specific exceptions.
WhatsApp’s privacy behaviour and available controls can evolve. The official WhatsApp Help Centre is the appropriate place to check current instructions, including any platform-specific differences, rather than relying on an old screenshot or forwarded tip.
Read receipts are a different setting
Last seen and online visibility should not be confused with read receipts. Those are controlled separately in Privacy and relate to indicators that a message has been read. Changing one setting does not automatically change the other.
Anyone reviewing activity privacy should therefore check read receipts independently. Group chats and other WhatsApp features can behave differently, so the explanatory text shown by the app should be read before a switch is changed.
Other signals can also reveal activity in context. Sending a message, typing, posting a status update or participating in a group may tell people that an account is in use. Hiding last seen and online status is a useful boundary, not a promise of complete invisibility.
Use blocking and reporting when privacy is not enough
Visibility controls reduce information sharing, but they do not resolve harassment, scams or unwanted contact. If a number is suspicious or persistent, open the chat or contact details and use WhatsApp’s Block option. Blocking is stronger than merely hiding an activity timestamp.
WhatsApp also provides a Report option for accounts or messages that may breach its rules. Menu placement can vary, so consult the in-app contact information screen or the official Help Centre. For threats or immediate danger, preserve relevant evidence and contact An Garda Síochána or emergency services as appropriate.
What the claim about “millions” means
WhatsApp operates on a global scale, with a user base measured in the billions. In that context, references to “millions” are about the enormous pool of people who use the service, not a verified count of profiles whose last-seen setting is exposed.
There is no public figure cited here showing how many users currently allow strangers to view that information. Individual exposure depends on each account’s chosen audience, contact relationships, app version and WhatsApp’s current defaults. The accurate test is the setting displayed on the user’s own phone.
A quick privacy check is worthwhile after installing WhatsApp on a new device or after a significant update. Select the last-seen audience deliberately, set online visibility to match if desired, then review read receipts and the rest of the Privacy menu separately.
