Why Jason Segel Decided to Star in Shrinking: The Personal Reason

Jason Segel rose to prominence thanks to How I Met Your Mother, but in recent years he has effortlessly captured the Apple TV audience by starring in Shrinking, a comedy-drama also supported by Harrison Ford in the cast, who chose Segel to portray Jimmy, a grieving therapist navigating a teenage daughter. In a recent interview, Jason Segel revealed the personal reason that led him to openly accept acting in this TV series.

Shrinking, Jason Segel admits what is the real reason this TV series works in his eyes

Originally conceived as a television trilogy, Shrinking followed the example of Ted Lasso and will return with a fourth season, a decision quickly approved by fans and commented on by Jason Segel. In an interview with People, the actor explained what motivates him to return to Jimmy: “Harrison [Ford] talks about it constantly, and his experience deals with Parkinson’s, that is, the people who come to him. Mine concerns the loss of a loved one. The people who come forward, and it is incredibly meaningful because it aligns perfectly with what I believe to be the purpose of making art. That is, for a limited period, you become a surrogate for the audience and you say: ‘I will explore this topic and I hope it can be helpful to you, to anyone living it or to anyone close to someone who is living it’.”

Regarding the themes tackled across the three seasons of Shrinking, all available for streaming on Apple TV, the actor added: “We address very delicate topics. When someone comes up to me and says, ‘Hey, it really helped me get through a difficult moment. I lost my partner last year. I lost my mother or father last year and this TV series helped me,’ that means a lot to me. And that is why I do it.” Segel says there’s a reason why Shrinking works: “Probably because many of us put our own experiences into it—the therapy sessions and what happens in our lives—making the writing and production of a series a very vulnerable process. And I believe this is precisely why it feels so authentic.”

Regarding the fourth season already confirmed by Apple TV, the creator Bill Lawrence hinted that the audience should probably expect a time jump: “I think when people return to watch this series, they’ll feel like it’s a story that’s completely different. We believe the characters in this series have enough material to tell, so we were curious to see how a new story could unfold for them. We’re already in the thick of writing, heading into the fourth season, so I’m lucky to already know what will happen. And I think the audience will enjoy it. Be surprised if there is a time jump, and it will feel like we’re telling a completely different story,” he told Variety not long ago.
