Jac Schaeffer has steered WandaVision to success. The creator and showrunner, she guided the Wanda Maximoff-focused miniseries on streaming service Disney+, achieving immediate popularity that later paved the way for two more spin-offs: Agatha All Along in 2024, still led by Schaeffer, and the upcoming VisionQuest. These three MCU-set television titles form the Wanda Trilogy and intend to bring to a close a clearly defined storytelling arc, but one of the questions posed to Paul Bettany concerns Jac Schaeffer: why didn’t she return for VisionQuest?
VisionQuest, why didn’t the WandaVision and Agatha All Along creator get involved? Paul Bettany’s explanation
VisionQuest, a miniseries starring White Vision, did not involve Jac Schaeffer as the creator and showrunner, with the baton passing to Terry Matalas. But why was that the case? Schaeffer, after all, conceived WandaVision and Agatha All Along, and Paul Bettany himself was convinced she would complete the Wanda Trilogy by also steering VisionQuest, but that is not how things played out.
Although she remained involved as an executive producer on VisionQuest, Jac Schaeffer does not appear as its creator or showrunner, and Bettany explained the reason in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly. The lead actor revealed that initially Schaeffer had wanted to take charge of VisionQuest, but she was then contacted by phone and informed of the decision: Schaeffer had stepped back from the project “for personal reasons.” At that moment Bettany added: “It felt as if the carpet had been pulled out from under me. I care about her a lot and we made something beautiful together. I was looking forward to my turn with Jac. And then, 24 hours later, I found myself having lunch with Terry, because that’s the speed at which Marvel moves.”
Terry Matalas, best known as a writer for Star Trek: Picard, joined the VisionQuest team and met with the lead actor to brainstorm some ideas for the miniseries, including the return of James Spader as Ultron, who, as we know, will have an intriguing role in VisionQuest. The series is set to stream on Disney+ from October 14, 2026, and will follow Vision after the events of WandaVision, as he grapples with a deep identity crisis and the sudden return of his son Tommy.
