Widow’s Bay, Betty Gilpin opens up about Sarah’s fate: will we see her in Season 2?
Set on a seemingly cursed island, Widow’s Bay tells the tale of mayor Tom Loftis who aims to secure a brighter future for the residents and for the next generations by increasing tourism on the island, unaware that what people are saying around is true. The island, in fact, is alive and evil, demands sacrifices, and everything is connected to its founder Richard Warren. Betty Gilpin played the wife of the latter, Sarah, brought to the island under deceit hoping for a fresh start and instead forced to come to terms with a new, violent reality.
Sarah marries Richard Warren discovering that the latter has struck a deal with an ancient malignant entity bound to the island and all its inhabitants. Whoever is born on the island cannot leave, and it is a curse that persists for centuries, as Tom himself will learn. Sarah had tried to distance herself from her husband as soon as she learned of his violent nature and she carried with her the children of that man, innocent beings who were nonetheless born on that very island.
After triumphing at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards 2026 by winning her Emmy as Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy, Betty Gilpin faced Sarah’s fate in Widow’s Bay. While acknowledging that Sarah’s story seems to have run its course by episode six of the first season, the actress remains hopeful. As Screen Rant reports, she stated: “I keep proposing to Katie Dippold [the creator of the series], via messages, ways in which a return of mine would make sense in the world of the show. It seems that, according to her brilliant and twisted logic of Widow’s Bay, a return wouldn’t make sense, but come on, find a way to let me come back. I would love it. I loved working on the series. Katie Dippold’s mind, her work, and the fact that Apple made her series possible give me faith in our industry, honestly. Something so original, niche, strange and human that finds success in the mainstream. It gives me hope, honestly, that we aren’t completely lost in our field.”
Sarah’s contribution was pivotal to the plot: it turns out she attempted to take Richard’s children away to offer them a new life on the mainland. During the journey, however, the island imposed its conditions and, as the rowboat was completely battered by waves and fog, only one of Richard’s children seems to have survived, having fallen into the sea and returned. This moment connects to the big revelation at the end of the first season, when Tom discovers who the true, last descendant of Richard Warren is.
Sarah has strongly influenced the story of Widow’s Bay and is the reason only one of Richard Warren’s children survived (she acted with good intentions and did not realize that taking the children away would doom them to death at sea). Having already given a significant push to the first season, Sarah’s return seems less likely in the second season, but could be explained with some flashbacks. In any case, the actress has said she is open to the possibility.
