Will Jack Nicholson Return to Acting? A Colleague Knows the Untold Truth

Whatever happened to Jack Nicholson? There has never been an official retirement from him, even though his last film is many years in the rearview, and the great actor is still 89 years old. Nicholson has always kept public appearances to a minimum, carefully stewarding his image. While presenting his autobiography at the Swansea Building Society Arena, his old friend and colleague Michael Douglas let slip that he knew a bit more: no health problems, perhaps it’s just pride that drives Jack to enjoy retirement…

Jack Nicholson is doing well but retired, as far as Michael Douglas knows

Michael Douglas is 82, his friend Jack Nicholson 89: we mustn’t forget that in 1975 they shared the grand experience of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, an Oscar for both of them: Jack as Best Actor, Michael as producer of Best Picture. Since then, although they have not worked together again, they have never stopped staying in touch, so it may be reasonable to take Douglas’s words about the current status of the illustrious colleague at face value: “I would have liked to act with Jack. He doesn’t work anymore. He’s fine. He’s disappeared. I know it. I still see him; he’s fine. He stays at home and goes around in slippers. It happens. He deserves it. I understand. He’s just a little older than me, but I understand.” It’s worth adding that Michael himself, busy promoting his autobiography “One Helluva Ride“, has, in recent years, been toying with the idea of retirement.

Besides that, Jack Nicholson has not been seen on the big screen since the ensemble comedy How Do You Know by James L. Brooks, dating back to 2010, where he was, nevertheless, only a supporting player: in fact at the time he wasn’t that far along in age, he could have continued, but as with Gene Hackman after 2004 it seems he decided there were no projects worthy of moving him. Nicholson has won the Oscar twice more, for Terms of Endearment and Something’s Gotta Give, both credited to Brooks.
