Ted Lasso 4, as the finale hints at major changes for season 5: the co-creator’s previews
The fourth season of Ted Lasso ended with several twists. A shift in Roy Kent, who agreed to become the new coach of Chelsea. On the private side, his life is also about to change, since Keeley is expecting. Rebecca, meanwhile, has decided to confront her fears and proposed to Matthijs to marry her. Another major change is that of Ted Lasso. After Mae’s loss and his son’s anxieties, Ted has made a decision: to resign as coach of the women’s team, becoming the assistant coach like Coach Beard, and handing his post to Alice.
In an interview with Variety, co-creator, screenwriter, executive producer and actor Brendan Hunt, who is involved in the series as Coach Beard, discussed how all this could influence season five. First of all, he revealed that Jason Sudeikis had wanted this change for Ted from the very beginning in the writers’ room. He saw Ted’s resignation as a fundamental element for the season’s development. That’s why the first episode opens with a close-up of his badge reading “Assistant Manager Lasso.”
Reflecting on the cues dropped in the fourth season, the actor added: “There aren’t many twists. But Ted and Beard as equals, rather than in a hierarchical position, intrigues me. Roy and Keeley becoming parents intrigues me. Rebecca getting married intrigues me. The guys running the pub, and how the team will react to Alice as leader? These are more questions than true twists. But, on the other hand, there’s no indication yet that we’ll get answers to these questions.” Season five has not yet been confirmed, but Brendan Hunt remains optimistic. Reflecting on the wishes of Jason Sudeikis, he admitted: “He doesn’t reveal his hand, and I’m not aware of what poker game, I hope, is being played among the powers that be. I think deep down we’ve always hoped to return for more than one season, but if in the end it turns out to be only one, that’s fine too. It ends well. We’ll see.”
