Witch on the Holy Night hits theaters on January 28, the anime film distributed by Crunchyroll and adapted from the eponymous visual novel by Type-Moon, refreshed for the occasion by Studio Ufotable, the very team behind the Dragon Slayer phenomenon. Witch on the Holy Night, the story and the video game phenomenon behind the Ufotable anime
The events and characters of Witch on the Holy Night originate as a visual novel, a genre of video game notable for its slow pace, primarily built from character portraits, dialogue, and occasionally moral choices that steer the storyline. The game, written by Kinoko Nasu and illustrated by Hirokazu Koyama, was produced by Type-Moon and published by Aniplex in 2012 in Japan for PC, with the western edition translated arriving much later in 2023 and ports for PS4 and Switch in 2024. The phenomenon has ultimately grown on a global scale only in recent years, leading Type-Moon to a new collaboration with Studio Ufotable, after adaptations of other works such as Fate/Zero or The Garden of Sinners.
The film’sSynopsis focuses on Aoko Aozaki, a high school student who hides the identity of an apprentice witch, transplanted into the modern world: she trains to become a true mage, alongside her roommate Alice Kuonji, another witch. Her fate changes when she meets a boy…
