X-Files: Ryan Coogler’s New Series Officially Greenlit for First Season

Eight years have passed since the last revival season featuring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, and a myth like The X-Files is poised to receive its definitive reboot, because the first season has been greenlit after a pilot that was evidently convincing, signed by Ryan Coogler. The new leading couple, different from Mulder and Scully, are as we expected Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel, with other prestigious names taking part in the pilot, which turned out to be incredibly costly, produced as a true high-budget film by Coogler.

X-Files officially restarts with a new cast, first season of the reboot approved

Ryan Coogler, buoyed by the domestic success (more so at home) of The Sinners, a filmmaker well regarded within Disney after Black Panther, managed to secure Hulu’s approval for the first season of the X-Files reboot. The universe created by Chris Carter hasn’t been seen in years, since the eleventh season (the second of the revival) ended in 2018, just before Disney acquired Fox’s assets in 2019. Since then the studio has been working to justify the outlay of the acquisition by capitalizing on franchises, but while brands like Alien have found space on Disney+/Hulu with Alien: Planet Earth, the X-Files revival has proven more complex. World of Reel explains that Coogler, although Jennifer Yale has been named showrunner (The Copenhagen Test, See, Underground), wanted to leave a decisive imprint on the reboot, particularly on the production/technical side, having shot the entire pilot on 65mm film, just as he did for The Sinners (which makes it reasonable to imagine a promotional IMAX screening of the pilot?). In short, no one is sparing costs, and we’ll have to see whether the other directors who will tackle the series, given that Coogler will soon be tied up with the third Black Panther, will be able to access resources as ambitious for the regular episodes.
