Zendaya in New Film in the Works With a Renowned Author, Genre Revealed

Not even one of her best years at the box office will be enough to satiate her ascent: Zendaya keeps climbing in the star system (as is true for her husband Tom Holland), so it comes as no surprise that one of the most in-demand sci‑fi writers has tapped her for his next project, to be shot during 2027. The subject at hand is the creator of the 28 Days Later saga, who also writes and directs his own distinctive films such as Civil War and Warfare. The project will unfold under the banner of America’s most famous indie label, A24.

Zendaya in an Alex Garland sci‑fi film produced by A24

In 2026 alone, Zendaya appeared in The Drama, Odyssey, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day: she didn’t always carry the same weight across all three features, but her presence certainly matters for Hollywood’s star system, with the combined box office of those films hovering around $4.43 billion (Box Office Mojo). This figure does not include the fate of the upcoming Dune: Part Three, scheduled to hit theaters on December 16. With a credit for Shrek 5 and the portrayal of singer Ronnie Spector in Barry Jenkins’s Be My Baby, Zendaya has now added a sci‑fi project with a still‑mysterious premise to her slate, set to shoot during 2027 and written and directed by Alex Garland. It promises to be a highly prestigious collaboration, because Garland, after starting as a screenwriter for 28 Days Later and The Beach, moved into directing in 2014 with Ex Machina, followed by works of definite interest such as Annihilation, Civil War, and the entirely grounded Warfare. For this feature, Garland returns to collaborate with the (relatively) indie label A24, which had already pushed its budget to the highest level in its history with Civil War, and now appears poised to redefine that ceiling again with the upcoming film adapted from the Elden Ring video game, for which filming has already wrapped, with a release planned for March 2028. We are eager to see the fruit of this collaboration between the English writer-director and Zendaya.
