Beniamino Zuccheddu is a man who can hide behind a serene exterior a tragic and incredible miscarriage of justice. The longest in Italian history, having spent unjustly more than 33 years behind bars. A film now arrives to tell his story, a tale of Zustissia or of his absence, urgent and full of humanity, as its protagonist, arrested in the inland mountains of Sardinia in 1991 for the brutal gun-murder of three men. At first there are no physical clues supporting the charges against Zuccheddu. However, a sudden turn of events determines the pastor’s conviction.
Zuccheddu is thus arrested and remains in prison for over three decades on charges of being the author of the Sinnai massacre. It will be necessary to wait until 2016 when Mauro Trogu decides to reopen the case and take it on pro bono, starting from the records and reconstructing the entire sequence of events. Now Zustissia tells his story, in a film written by Lisa Nur Sultan and Niccolò Gentili, starring Fabrizio Ferracane, with Michele Riondino in the role of his lawyer.
We met the director, Francesco Piras, in this video interview.
